Metallica is Scary!

I know this is not going to be popular, but I am not a huge Metallica fan. I know JB Martell, Vince Steele, and Heavy Metal Momma are going to roll their eyes at me. Frankly, James Hatfield scares the heck out of me. He’s big, he’s hairy, and his voice is super aggressive. Yikes.

I do, however, have a great deal of respect for Metallica. They were formed in 1981 in California, and they have been labeled one of the big four thrash metal bands. They have sold more than 90 million records worldwide. They are icons to so many musicians! Still, despite my respect for them, I’m not a fan.

I know their hits. “Enter Sandman” gives me nightmares. “For Whom the Bell Tolls” makes me shiver. “I Am Evil” is, well, evil. One of the few songs I do like, more or less, is “The Day That Never Comes.” This is a great song about the struggles of military in Afghanistan. The music is awesome, and the video makes me cry. I still don’t really like James Hatfield’s singing though.

And that is the basic reason I do not like Metallica. They are amazing musicians, and I could listen to their music for hours. I like the rhythm, the beat, and the sound of the band. I just really find James Hatfield too intense for me. That’s just my opinion.

Lynch Mob vs. Dokken or Lynch Mob with Dokken

The title is confusing because I’m just as confused as you are. Many sites are reporting that Lynch Mob is trying to work out a touring deal with Dokken. This is significant based on history alone.

Lynch Mob, which is really George Lynch has some very close ties to Dokken, which is really Don Dokken. The guitar superhero Lynch was in Dokken from 1981 to 1988 before George and Don just couldn’t get along. The tension in the once Heavy Metal Powerhouse reached a fever pitch back in those days and led to George leaving and forming Lynch Mob.

Lynch Mob released several albums, but the most popular will always be Wicked Sensation in 1990. Dokken on the other hand had more releases and live albums, but neither was able to reach the popularity they had when they were together. With that being said in 1993 they gave it another try. It was a disaster.

They put out an album that Don claimed was completely controlled by George and was an act to ruin the Dokken name. George claimed that Don refused to modernize his music and this was an attempt to put the Dokken name to rest. I really don’t know who was right because the album “Shadow Life” was terrible and ill received. So in 1997 they broke up again when George walked out on a European tour.

Both went their ways again and recorded material that has done very little to the Heavy Metal landscape, but their names came up in a big way a couple of years ago when they decided to do a song together at Rocklahoma. It must have gone well, but one song does not make a band.

Now Lynch is saying the two bands are going to tour together side by side. I guess that’s possible, but they better realize as Dokken is on stage people are going to be waiting for Lynch to come out and knock of some classics. Separate buses may work? They better give Dave Mustaine and Kerry King a call to see how Slayer and Megadeth managed to tour together when they hate each others guts.

By the way I pick George Lynch in Round 3 by TKO

Pantera: Microblog

Pantera was formed back in the 1980’s, I guess it was one of those bands you loved or hated. At any rate the band had some kick ass tunes, bands such as Kiss and Van Halen initially influenced the band.

Pantera’s style had changed in the late 1980’s and became post thrash, better known in their genre as “Groove Metal.” In 1990 they got their first major hit with Cowboys from Hell.

In 2001 the band went on hiatus and was never really able to reunite due to Anselmo aparent drug use. And any hope of this band ever getting back in full swing was taken away when “Dimbag” Darrell was shot and killed on stage at the” Alrosa Villa” in Ohio, in 2004. If you are interested in more info on Pantera or reading more heavy metal blogs on them check out www.pantera.com

Various news sources on the Internet are reporting that Bruce Kulick has finished his new solo album called simply BK3. Nice! Its called BK3 for the very self explanatory reason that this will be his third solo album following 2001's Audio Dog and 2003's Transformer. Both were mediocre but I think Bruce has some stuff up his sleeve for this one to make it worth checking out.

For those that are wondering what Bruce Kulick has been doing since his KISS days well the answer is plenty. Not only has he put out the two albums described above, but also he has been the lead guitarist for Grand Funk Railroad for quite sometime now. Even though you might not know it they have a very hectic touring schedule that keeps Bruce very busy on the world music scene. Also he does a ton of appearances for the KISS brand at expos and festivals.

I teased you above about the exciting things, but as always I'm going to follow through. BK3 will have many guests on it for vocals, but one of the notables is John Corabi (Motley Crue and ESP). The reason he is notable is John plays in ESP with Bruce and current KISS drummer Eric Singer, hence the "Eric Singer Project - ESP." That might seem a little anti-climatic but that was done on my part for a reason. You see the most notables on the album will be Nick and Gene Simmons. Yes Gene Simmons and his son. People say that Gene holds a grudge but it appears to me that he isn't holding much of a grudge against Bruce if he is carrying lead vocals on one of his songs and lending his son out for guitar work. Gene is about money and if he was willing to be on BK3 then he must think it's going to be good. You throw all of these elements together and you've got one hell of a record. The release date hasn't been set yet, but when it comes out you can bet the We Love Metal team will get a review up for you first thing. Life after KISS: Bruce Kulick style.

Martell's Top 20 Vocalists - #5 to #1

As I stated on my other heavy metal blog list, this is just who I like. Not a matter of technical performance or record sales or popularity. These are just the vocalists that you will find on my MP3 Player and on the Flash Drives in my car. I enjoy all music, just some more then others. Now lets end this list!

#5 - Brian Johnson - Obviously you can't think of Brian Johnson's music without AC/DC coming up. You know what, that's fine with me. After the passing of Bon I don't think anyone thought that voice could be filled, but Brian has done that with dignity and respect to the band. The new generation doesn't really know that there was a different voice at the mic of AC/DC that has to say something about the talent of this man. Brian is so high on the list because of the amazing catalogue of music that he will forever be known for.

#4 - James Hetfield - Not the James Hetfield from the documentary "Some Kind of Monster", but the James Hetfield us metal heads know and love from "Kill Em All". James has an amazing voice that compliments not only his own guitar playing but also that of fellow shredder Kirk Hammett. Metallica is the band that all others strive to be and that is in a big part because of the vocals of their main man. Metallica is Metallica and I love it. Growl you bastard growl.

#3 - Vince Neil - This is very shocking to some reading this site including my wife because I am a huge Motley Crue fan, but the fact is I'm a Motley Crue fan, not really a massive Vince Neil fan. Vince needs Nikki Sixx, Mick Mars, and Tommy Lee to be complete. That has been proven time and time again with his sub par solo career, but with that being said no one else could sing the songs I love like Vince (the John Corabi experiment), so that puts him at number 3. I think my wife puts him at #1 for other reasons, but this is vocals not…

#2 - Bruce Dickenson - When you talk about Heavy Metal Music can you possibly have a conversation without this man. Bruce's music speaks for itself. I'm not a fan of the best Iron Maiden front man argument simply because there really is no other. Bruce is the standard which most singers gauge their performance. Seeing this man use that range live is something you will never forget. Eddie might be the Maiden mascot, but Bruce is the voice and always will be. SCREAM FOR ME WE LOVE METAL!

#1 - Ronnie James Dio - Believe it or not until a couple of years ago I really didn't know that much about Dio, until Vince had me listen to Holy Diver. I was blown away that a Heavy Metal Musician could sound so dark and evil one moments and so operatic the next. I'm one of those people that will pick Dio over Ozzy in Sabbath (or Heaven and Hell) any day of the week. Heaven and Hell, Lady Evil, Mob Rules, incredible songs that need no justification. Not to mention the fact that he raised Rainbow to new heights with hits like "The Man on Silver Mountain" and his solo career was off the charts. Dio is the voice of Heavy Metal and the image that will keep it strong into the future. If you think he's getting old check out the new H&H album and you be the judge. SHOW ME THE HORNS DIO!

That's the end, do your worst!

Top 20 Heavy Metal Vocalists = 10 to 6

As I stated on my other list, this is just who I like. Not a matter of technical performance or record sales or popularity. These are just the vocalists that you will find on my MP3 Player and on the Flash Drives in my car. I enjoy all music and enjoy writing these heavy metal blogs, just some more then others. Now lets rock this list!

#10 - Axl Rose - It is really, really difficult for me to put him this high on the list considering everything he has done to his fans to alienate them. There is no bigger diva then Axl (made me wait 7 hours to see him perform while openers reassured us he was there), but his music speaks for itself. Well at least Appetite did. I love that album so much that it put Axl in my Top 10 because I still listen to it all these years later and hear its influence all over the place. Oh but Axl, how did Chinese Democracy work out for ya?

#9 - Stephen Percy - This one will raise a few eyebrows as most music industry people say Percy is more of a performer then vocalist, but the first 3 platinum RATT albums would lead me to disagree with that theory. In both RATT and Arcade Percy has proven himself to be a great front man and has a place on my play list any day of the week. Tell Morgan that Percy sucks and get ready for the impact.

#8 - Sammy Hagar - I have never hidden how much I like Sammy and seeing him just last month was a dream come true. With that being said why is he not higher on the list? Well… I hate Van Halen. Despise them, don't even respect them very much or their contribution to Pop (as Angus Young would say). Van Hagar was better, but those were dark......

#15 - Dave Mustaine - Not really known for his vocals, but its really what I know him for. When Mustaine is acting pissed off and angry Megadeth's music comes alive for me. They claim the new album is Mustaine more pissed then ever, so that I look forward to. I respect his guitar playing and helping found the thrash movement, but a Megadeth by any other voice wouldn't be Megadeth.

#14 - Kevin Dubrow - Now if you ask me for this list again in another year you might find the Quiet Riot front man much closer to the front. Unfortunately since his death I have really started to listen to the work he left behind. Quiet Riot has some great tunes and really was the first Metal band to cross over to the mainstream with the epic Metal Health. With Randy gone and now Kevin it's a major loss for Metal and leaves me wishing I had given Quiet Riot some respect earlier.

#13 - Ozzy Osbourne - Some days I love him, some days I hate him. If he is fronting Black Sabbath or belting out Crazy Train, Ozzy is the Prince of Darkness. If he is on TV dressed like a women or bitching about dog shit he's just a joke. Ozzy helped found the music I love with....

Martell's Top 20 Vocalists - #20 to #16

As I stated on my other list, this is just who I like. Not a matter of technical performance or record sales or popularity. These are just the vocalists that you will find on my MP3 Player and on the Flash Drives in my car. I enjoy all music and enjoy writing these heavy metal blogs, just some more then others. Now lets rock this list!

#20 - Rob Halford - Although you will find Rob at the top of most people's Metal lists I'm not that huge of a Priest fan and never really got into his solo stuff. Even though he is the acclaimed Metal God I'm just giving him some respect for what he's done and the Priest songs I like.

#19 - Dee Snider - Dee was a lot higher when I started thinking about this list for everything he did for Metal and all the great stuff he said to Tipper Gore back in the day, but then two things happened: Gone Country and the new Twisted song 30. I struggle with Metal musicians doing the crossover. I love the guy and his antics, but he dropped off in my play list during recent times.

#18 - Gene Simmons - Gene will never be known for his vocals, but he has done some classic KISS tunes that we all sing pretty much everyday. His voice is unique and exactly what is needed to offset the high octave of Stanley. Domino and I Love it Loud are two of my favorite KISS songs; both are Gene songs. Gene might not be the professional trained voice of Paul, but his roughness only adds to the Demon and KISS.

#17 - Sebastian Bach - Much like Dee Snider a few years ago Sebastian would have been near the top of my list, but along came his departure from Skid Row and once again that damn Gone Country show. I love the screaming deep vocals of Sebastian on Monkey Business and Slave to the Grind, but not much since then has tickled my fancy. In the next...

Danger Kitty, Metal Shop, And Metal Skool = STEEL PANTHER

This 80's Metal Glam band is definitely something you should check out! They keep you very entertained and laughing. Their "Steel Panther" songs are some of the best songs I've ever heard…lol.

The Band members are, Stix Zadinia (drummer) Satchel (guitarist) Michael Starr (vocals) and Lexxi Foxx ( bassist) the guys of Steel Panther keep busy with other bands and projects.

Recently the band has moved to the Key Club on the sunset strip where their shows have been selling out on a regular basis. They continue to play other regular gigs in the Southern California area including a weekly show in San Diego, California.

The band also does many cover songs as well and is joined on stage by other bands from...

Probot is Heavy Metal

Here I go again on another Dave Grohl rant, but the fact is the man has done so much their should be a blog site just on him. (if there's not already) Probot is the project that Dave formed to show the world his love of Heavy Metal, all forms of Heavy Metal.

The self-titled album features classic Metal, Nu-Metal, Death Metal, Melodic Metal, and a lot of those other Metal categories I hate to see defined. To me its just good old Kick Ass Heavy Metal. Dave never really intended for it to be an album, just a collaboration of some of his friends getting together to play some music he personally loves.

Fellow artists seemed to dig this concept so they turned out in droves to play. Lemmy, King Diamond, Venom, Snake, Jack Black, just to name a few. Only one single came off the album and that was "Shake Your Blood." An amazing song featuring Lemmy on lead vocals and bass. The rest of the album contains the same feel and jumps around to the point that you can't wait to hear what's next. I've never hidden the fact that I'm not a major death metal fan, but the two tracks on the album are without monotone vocals and don't beat you to death with drums that drown everything out. In my humble opinion some of the "Death Metal Legends" could learn a thing or two about how to make Death Metal more commercial for the everyday listener.

Like the first Foo Fighter album Dave recorded all the instruments and put guest vocalists in to complete these Heavy Metal....

AC/DC Moncton Concert Review

It was not a good start to the concert last Thursday, August 6th. It took us two hours to get from Amherst to Moncton because of the construction on the highway. We finally arrived at the venue, and then had to walk half an hour to get to the actual concert site. We got there, got through security, and we were feeling pretty good. I was willing to forgive the walk, as the site has permanent bathrooms there! Wow, was it nice to not have to use a port-a-potty at a concert. But then, the concert promoters made a colossal mistake - the only alcoholic beverages they had available was beer. I hate beer.

That being said, nothing could dampen our spirits and the anticipation we felt for seeing Anvil and AC/DC. We had just arrived at the venue when Anvil took the stage. Lips was great! You could tell he was psyched to be there in front of over 80,000 fans in Canada. He played the guitar with his teeth, he played with a dildo, he played with everything he had in him. Rob, meanwhile, was playing the drum set he described in their documentary that he described as his dream set. They finished off their set with Metal on Metal and soaked up the appreciation the fans lavished on them. I hope they know how awesome they looked and sounded!

The We Love Metal crew moved down to the front of the crowd. We were about three rows back from the VIP section. AC/DC began the show with a raunchy video....

Lips of ANVIL - Exclusive Interview

Interview w/ Lips of ANVIL
August 4, 2009

WLM: Lips you are on with JB Martell, Vince Steele, and Heavy Metal Momma of welovemetal.com. How are things going

Lips: Amazing! In one word amazing. Miraculous in another word. (laughs)

WLM: Were just a Metal site that doesn't claim to be anything but fans that write for fans. We are based in the Maritimes Canada and the Metal scene has exploded out here on the East Coast, so were pretty honoured to talk to you because you documentary is a big reason why people are starting to get back into Metal.

Lips: I'm really glad to hear you say that. I hoped it would be and if its perceived as being that way then I guess some more of my hopes have come to pass.

WLM: We know your very busy but we have a couple of questions for you if you have time

Lips: Sure

WLM: A sort of off the wall questions, but what is a question you would like to be asked that has never been asked of you

Lips: I don't think there's any questions left.

WLM: So you've had quite a few then and had to answer them all. (laughter)

Lips: Literally thousands and thousands of questions.

WLM: In the documentary Lips you are very passionate and emotional and it appears to us you are really like that. Is that what your like in real life

Lips: Its extraordinarily accurate, the only thing that is edited is most of my despair. You know what I mean, they got rid of some of the negative side. The side that is in constant worry. The level of worry is not always depicted but is extremely prevalent in real life. But in every other aspect is extremely accurate with the stuff that really happened.

WLM: What kind of music have you guys been listening to Is there anything new that you have tried

Lips: I generally live in my own little world where I listen to the same music over and over again. Its pretty much what you grew up with and that's in everyone. Every once in a while something newer creeps in. You drive in your car and listen to the radio, but to me there is only two kinds of music, good and bad. Its doesn't even matter which genre it is, if its something that catches my ear, well… it caught my ear.

Also meeting some of these big bands and celebrities has led me to be inquisitive enough to try to find out who and what they do. Once such example would be Chris Martin...
