I Can Hear the Chickenfeet Approaching...

Yesterday Vince and I headed up to Halifax to get our media accredidation and let me tell you this is the most organized group of promoters we have worked with yet. A huge "Horns Up" goes out to Ben and his gang for the job they have done on Halifax Rockfest. This is going to be an amazing event and as the talent always gets the nods we would like to thank all the behind the scene work that goes into a massive production like this.

Halifax Rockfest is in tribute to Canadian Troops and the work they do everyday to keep our citizens safe. You have to remember if it wasn't for our Armed Forces we wouldn't have the opportunity to attend open air concerts and talk about whatever we want on the net. So I guess another thank you goes out to troops and I hope these brave men and women enjoy the show and realize the cheers they hear are for them as much as the acts.

This week has been Chickenfoot week, but we need to remind everyone that there are some other huge names on the bill. Halifax boys Sloan are there, Finger Eleven - who had a massive hit with Paralyzer and any band with a Flying V playing Yeti is ok in my books, we also have Canadian Hard Rock Mainstay...

Lets Get to Know Chad Smith

When I was asked to blog on Chad, I thought, hmm, don't know much about this chap but that's what I consider my job, to learn and share. I do remember a Chad Smith from school but this is definitely not the same guy. So I did a little digging and I knew that he was the drummer for the Red Hot Chilli Peppers but didn't know much more. He has experience with many genres such as Funk rock, Alternative rock, Hard rock and Heavy metal. He is also talented as a musician being able to play Drums (of course), Piano, Oboe, Saxophone, Guitar, Didgeridoo and Flute. He's 47 and has like 5 kids (throughout the years and not all from the same woman) the youngest having been born this year. Chad likes to ride and he rides the best (in my opinion), Harleys. He's got a Road King and a 100ths Anniversary Soft Tail. Think I'd need a Dyna Low Rider myself.

This dude has been busy with other bands not just with the Super Group Chickenfoot! And actually Chickenfoot is a side project! He has also had a part in other artist's albums such as Alannis Morrisette, John Fogerty, Dave Navarro, Johnny Cash, Dixie Chicks to mention a few and been in some films like Howard Stern's Private Parts and Session Man. Chad's main focus is "Chad Smith's Bombastic Meatbats", I shit you not! Chad Smith's Bombastic Meatbats is an American instrumental funk-rock band from Los Angeles, California. It consists of Chad, of course (duh), guitarist Jeff Kollman (from Cosmosquad), bassist Kevin Chown (Uncle Kracker, Ted Nugent), and keyboardist Ed Roth. "Chad's been consulting (along with Travis Barker and others) on a new video game from the makers of Guitar Hero, and he's been collaborating with his three-year-old-son's schoolteacher on a children's book. And he's formed yet another band, featuring guitar god Joe Satriani and former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony and singer Sammy Hagar. Chickenfoot, as they're called, is currently working on a CD." (Compliments of Modern Drummer Magazine). He's also been working on other projects and has a DVD out on his life as a drummer called Eastern Rim. It includes interviews, clinics, live performances, and some great bonus material.

If any of you have read up on Sammy Hagar, you'll know that he has a place down in Mexico and he's quite a businessman! Anyway, Chad is off on a break from Red Hot Chili Peppers and just jammin' with Sammy. He met Mike through Sammy and then they came up with the odd name, Chickenfoot, and then needed a guitar player! Et voila! Super Group! Maybe it was all of Sammy's Tequila they were drinking when they came up with the name.

He's an awesome drummer as I looked through some you tube stuff and remembered vid's from years gone by. Lets face it, when I watched Red Hot Chili Peppers videos way back when I was focusing more on Flea flying around and the half nekid guy (Anthony) signing (lol). I knew the sound was awesome though and that he was there, I do remember him. I am amazed with all of the projects that he has had and all that he has on the go! I only touched on some of them! And to be playing, seems like, more for fun than anything, that's fantastic. Chickenfoot as a side project, geez.

He recently sustained a serious injury to his right arm while playing in Paris by tearing his small bicep. Then a week later he goes and aggravates it to cause...

Sammy Hagar - True Tattooed Millionaire

Sammy or "The Red Rocker" or "The Cabo Wabo Guy" or "The Most Successful Lead Singer of Van Halen." Call him what you want but there is no denying the effect that Sammy Hagar has had on both the music world and business world.

Sammy will always be best known for his Front Man responsibilities in Van Halen, but you have to remember this is a guy that has been in several other bands such as Montrose, HSAS, Cabo Wabo, and a massive solo career. He has made over 23 studio albums (many platinum), 2 live works, and several DVDs. That's just the music side of this amazing rock legend.

Sammy and the boys from Van Halen opened a bar in Mexico years ago thinking it would be a huge profit boom and they loved spending time in the area. Well the club didn't do as well as suspected so the other band mates dropped out and Sammy took over ownership. Also during this time Sammy was producing Tequila to sell at the club. That Tequila served at Sammy's little Cantina has since been sold for an initial payment of 80 million for 20% of the company. Many feel by the time the deal is done it will be worth approximately 800 million. Holy Batman Eddie!

That money has freed Sammy up to do a lot of pet projects including inviting musician friends of his down to Cabo Wabo Cantina to jam for the patrons. You never know who is going to show up so it creates a very exciting atmosphere and place you have to visit if you are a true music fan.

Sammy's latest project is called Chickenfoot with...

Death Metal & The Cookie Monster

I'm going for a little swim in the Death Metal pool. This is something that doesn't turn me on a lot but as I have said before, I am open-minded and might find something I like if I learn about it. Death Metal is something that I didn't know existed till only years ago but come to find out it was started back in the mid-80's.

Some people frown on the idea of death metal and avoid the scariness having the stereotype of it with members believing in Satanism, anti-religion, Occultism, mysticism, philosophy and social commentary. However, few practice mysticism and most seem to use it solely as metaphorology for their works. Although violence may be explored in various other genres as well, death metal elaborates on the details of extreme acts, including mutilation, dissection, torture, rape and necrophilia. ….And this is different from Eminem because???? I can't always understand what's being sung with Death Metal so I didn't know this was what they were singing about.

Venom and Slayer influenced early Death Metal. Some thrash metal that helped this genre along were Celtic Frost, Kreator and then an early pioneer, the band Death (see blog pic of Death's deceased lead signer Chuck Schuldiner, the father of death metal).

Now to explain about the cookie monster and how he plays a part in this (if you didn't already know)… simple really, there is death growling and grunting and this is also known as Cookie Monster vocals. Really though, think about it and remember what he sounded like and don't tell me you never watched Sesame Street. The comparison is uncanny.

We were there when Cannibal Corpse played last year in Montreal at Heavy MTL but I didn't pay a lot of attention at the time because I was waiting for other acts and as mentioned wasn't really in to that kind of music. Now I wished I had paid more attention so I'd have a live performance to blog about to compare…o wait! I do! We saw ATR (All That Remains - said to be melodic metalcore, and melodic death metal (earlier shit)) in May as they were one of the 3 opening bands for Disturbed. Now, I was impressed by the reaction of the crowd. Our seats weren't bad and we could look down on them in the pit so we could see a lot. They got the pit going and signalled for the Circle Pit, now that was awesome! The show they put on was good and the lead signer was full of life flying around the stage. I was glad there was some signing with the growling as it gave a break. …sorry guys for the fans of Death Metal, I could handle some but it was hard on my head. Lol. A lot of it probably had to do with the acoustics of the building. Speaking of my head, I did catch myself bobbing my head to the music...

Celtic Frost

I'm going to blog about a band called" Celtic Frost" I heard of them many years ago but haven't heard too much in recent years, and its not really the type of music I listen too but I do enjoy leaning about the different types of metal music, if I can call it that. The band is still going with a few changes in band members over the years, the name "Celtic Frost" seems to stay in tacked. They ...

Anthrax Breaking News

As you can see from the title it appears that Anthrax has parted ways with singer Dan Nelson. You can't really call him new because he has been around for about three years, but really has done very little with the band. The new album was set to be released soon, but with the recent developments I can't imagine Dan's voice will be on it. Where this story gets interesting is all dates have been cancelled except for one. That one off show will be covered by past singer John Bush. A very well known voice of Anthrax that could thrust them back into the spotlight when the new albums drops. If the boys can keep it together for this show and realize the benefit of this business relationship then Anthrax will be back where they deserve.
